tompo
Tompo has been playing to Australian blues audiences for over three years. The 27 year old has a quietly endearing stage presence which he has taken to festivals near and far performing at previous years festivals at Bridgetown and also the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival and the Australian Blues Festival in NSW. Tompo was a finalist in the 2005 WAM Song of the Year contest in the Blues category and has been described by former JJJ Roots and All presenter Jordie Kilby as a "Big Voice".
Particularly drawn in by Delta stylings of blues, he blends the sounds of Delta slide greats such as Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson with his own eclectic past experience and training in classical guitar and fingerstyle using his guitars, blues harp, stomp-box and shakers to convey his heartfelt songs of ‘good news blues.’ Now playing with one of Perth's finest session jazz drummers (Wade Saunders) Tompo is certain to take his blues to another level.
Tompo recorded his first E.P ‘Light Your Way’ in 2005, which has found its way into homes across Australia and has received airplay on local, national and international radio. Following in it's footsteps was his debut album "The Good News Blues" which was released late 2006 and has been critically well received with reviews by the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society stating "God it’s great when you come across a blues artist who is doing something different!..spanning a musical landscape from traditional delta stylings to more of a Nick Cave or Tom Waits flavour"
Tompo is fast winning fans and praise country-wide. He has been described by Sonia Meggs, the President of the MBAS as a ‘true bluesman’:
“At a very young age Tompo has captured the blues and made it his own. You will be enthralled by his presentation and style of his music, his vocals are deep and soulful reminding me of the past struggles of men working on a chain-gang, or in the cotton fields in the deep south in the days of slavery. Tompo is a true bluesman!”
